Everything we know about the new season of True Detective

It stars our own Colin Farrell.

HBO / YouTube

IT’S JUST ONE minute long, but the True Detective season two teaser trailer has us VERY excited for June.

We’ve watched it a few times (for research, like), and have scoured the internet for information, so here’s what we know so far about the forthcoming season.

Fasten your seatbelts.

When will it air?

On HBO, on 21 June in the USA. We can expect eight hour-long episodes.

What about Ireland?

Season 1 was broadcast on Sky Atlantic, but there has been no official confirmation from them yet about if it will be the same this time around.

There were only a few weeks between the US and UK/Ireland airing dates last time, so fingers crossed.

Who’s in it?

Not Matthew McConaughey and his lovely blazers, that’s for sure.

Sigh.

Sorry, where was I?

Oh, right. Here’s the main cast:

rachel

  • Rachel McAdams as Ventura County Sheriff detective Ani Bezzerides. (We already love her)

colin TD

  • Colin Farrell as “compromised” detective Ray Velcoro, who works with Ani. (Big moustache. Looks troubled.)

taylor

  • Taylor Kitsch as California Highway Patrol motorcycle cop Paul Woodrugh. (Handsome. Troubled. Thumps people outside of hospitals)

vince v td

  • Vince Vaughn as entrepreneur/criminal Frank Semyon. (Troubled. Knows Velcoro.)

kelly reilly td

  • Kelly Reilly as Jordan, Semyon’s wife and former D-list actress. (She’s a great British actress who you may know from Sherlock)

Where is it set?

California.

What’s the theme song this time around?

So long, the great Handsome Family.

With T Bone Burnett as music supervisor, the song choices are always top notch here.

This latest song is a bit of a mystery, though the Arden Concert Gild claims that it is performed by country singer Lera Lynn

If you Google the song lyrics, you get nada.

What’s that necklace Colin Farrell’s character is wearing?

belo tie

It’s called a Bolo Tie, and it’s associated with the American West, and sometimes with Native American silversmiths.

The bolo tie was made the official neckwear of Arizona back in 1971.

A key to Velcoro’s past or his motivations? Or just a hint that he’s a fan of silver-and-leather decorative neckwear?

Who wrote and directed this season?

The series creator Nic Pizzolatto is back, and Cary Fukunaga (the first season’s director) is an executive producer.

Justin Lin directed the first two episodes. He’s also the guy behind the camera for the Fast and Furious movies…

But what’s it going to be about?

Looks like a move away from the supernatural elements (Carcosa! The Yellow King! Voodoo!) of the first season, and instead a focus on a murder, criminals, a dark underworld, sex and money.

Standard.

Says HBO:

A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California.
Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life’s work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own.
Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.

Last year, HBO executives said that the first two scripts of the new season are “more exciting than the first season”.

According to MoviePilot (which could be absolutely wrong about this, but we’ll soon see):

  • The dead body that’s found has got satanic symbols carved into its chest
  • Woodrugh and Velcoro are assigned to the case
  • The victim is apparently an associate of Seymon, and had links to S&M clubs
  • Bezzerides helps Woodrugh and Velcoro, but she and Velcoro don’t see eye-to-eye.

I heard there will be an orgy scene in it

According to leaks, there will indeed be an orgy scene, and two adult film actors were hired to act in it.

Last time around, we all gasped at the technical audacity required for this one-take, six-minute wonder:

This time, it could the “colossal” and “deliriously vast” orgy scene that captures our attention. Hmm.

Finally, who’s this lad?

td trailer

Only time will tell.

Farewell, Hart and Cohle.
