Met Éireann’s meteorological definition is in line with most European institutes’ definition of summer and with what the World Meteorological Organisation says.
TODAY IS OFFICIAL the first day of summer according to Met Éireann – although the weather might suggest otherwise.
But according to the Gaelic calendar, summer starts on Bealtaine, 1 May, and ends 31 July. To complicate things further, the astronomical summer in Ireland doesn’t begin until the summer solstice on 21 June.
However, Met Éireann’s meteorological definition is in line with most European institutes’ definition of summer and with what the World Meteorological Organisation says.
