The Daily Fix: Saturday

In tonight’s Fix: Has Norris got the numbers for the Áras and what about McGuinness?; which country looks set to legalise same-sex marriage; and have you seen Ireland’s version of the Haka?

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you a round up of all the day’s main news as well as the bits and pieces that you may have missed.

Race for the Áras

  • Martin McGuinness now has more than enough support for his name to be on the ballot paper for the presidential election but David Norris faces an uphill task to secure enough signatures. Here’s who is backing who so far.
  • Sinn Féin’s McGuinness told the BBC today that he would be prepared to meet the Queen if he was elected president. His party was opposed to the monarch’s historic visit to Ireland in May.
  • With six people potentially in the Race for the Áras, we’ve been asking who would get your vote for president of Ireland. So far, the two latest entrants top the poll.
  • Meanwhile, a poll carried out for tomorrow’s Sunday Independent before McGuinness entered the race has found support still strong for Michael D Higgins but a worrying fall for Gay Mitchell.

In today’s other news…

  • A man has been arrested after a woman in her 40s was found stabbed to death outside a house in Roscommon town earlier today. Gardaí are investigating and a post-mortem on the woman is pending.
  • Irish rugby fans are toasting a remarkable victory over Australia at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand this morning. The Aussies were put to the sword in a 15-6 victory that our colleagues over TheScore.ie have been providing all the  reaction to.
  • In Libya, fierce battles are being waged for the last remaining Muammar Gaddafi strongholds – Sirte and Bani Walid. But in a boost to the Libyan rebels, the country’s National Transitional Council is to be recognised formally by the UN.
  • A Catholic priest has come under fire over his views that Irish mothers and wives are also to blame for the sexual abuse of children. Fr Paddy Banville’s are ill-judged and inaccurate, according to the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.
  • Despite securing interest rate cuts that will save Ireland €10 billion on its EU and IMF loans, the Government has been criticised for performing a u-turn on its pre-election promise to burn senior bondholders at Anglo Irish Bank.
  • An Antrim-based property development firm has had to pay the Revenue over €3.5 million it has emerged. See who else had to pay up here, including horse trainer Aidan O’Brien.
  • Britain looks set to legalise same-sex marriage with the government to hold a public consultation on an issue that is likely to split parts of the coalition Conservative and Liberal Democrat government.
  • There could be mass rioting on the streets of New York unless action is taken to help young people into employment, the mayor of city has warned. Michael Bloomberg was speaking on his weekly radio show.
  • The beer has been flowing and we’ve put together some fantastic pictures from Munich’s annual Oktoberfest.
  • The Seanad needs to change or die, says the youngest member of the upper house in a column for TheJournal.ie.
  • Michael Moore is coming to Ireland next month. The filmmaker and author has released his first book in a number of years and as these videos show he’s not short of controversial, provocative views.
  • Ever seen the film ‘Weekend at Bernie’s'? If you’re familiar with the premise then you might be a little disturbed by this story of two men who seem to have recreated the events of the 80s hit comedy.
  • Plenty of interesting developments in the Premier League today including another collapse by Arsenal on a trip to north-west England. Read Miguel Delaney’s verdict here.
  • Finally, with the day that is in it, check out these Irish lads giving it socks in their own version of the New Zealand rugby team’s famous Haka pre-match dance:
