Homes evacuated after army bomb disposal team called to device in Waterford
The artillery shell has been removed to a safe military location for further examination.

THE ARMY BOMB disposal team were called upon after a suspicious device was discovered in Waterford this afternoon.

An historic artillery shell was found in a residential area of Dunmore East by a member of the public.

Some local residents were evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution, and a cordon was put in place.

The team arrived on scene at 4.50 and safely isolated the shell and removed it to a safe military location for further examination. The scene was declared safe at 5 pm.

The Defence Forces are appealing to members of the public who come across historic explosives or weapons  to maintain a safe distance and inform the gardaí, who in turn will request Defence Forces assistance.
